Living in California (A Floridian's Perspective)

I recently moved to California and I immediately noticed some differences between here and the last two places I lived (Florida and Barbados). And since I didn't really know what to expect when I moved here, I've decided to make a little list of some things to know ahead of time.

Prepare for Dryness

While I did move here from Barbados, the dryness that comes from California is completely different. For a little perspective, Florida has a lot of rain, so as a result, a lot of the days are humid and warm. And in the warmer months like July and August, it's essentially a state-wide sauna. Barbados is less humid than Florida, but it does have a rainy season so it's still a different kind of heat. This brings us to California, a state with a Mediterranean-like climate. It's somewhat like a desert and very dry. When I first got here, I didn't even run the AC or turn on the fan. I found it to be very cold and deeply regretted leaving behind all my lip balm. So if you are coming to California, be prepared with lotion and chapstick.

Mountains, Mountains, Everywhere

California is a mountainous state. And while I have lived in Tennessee, the mountains in California are truly massive. The air is much thinner as you go up, so be careful if you go on a hike! In Florida, I visited the highest point in the peninsula, Bok Tower. It stands at an elevation of 295ft and you can see several miles when you reach the top of it. In comparison, Los Angeles is at an elevation of 305ft. Barbados' highest point, Mount Hillaby is 1,102ft above sea level, so you could say I've gradually worked my way up to California. So if you're moving here, be sure to bring your hiking legs!

A Foodie's Paradise

California does not hold back when it comes to cuisine. Thanks to the diversity of the state, you'll find plenty of food options to satisfy your palate. From Japanese to Mexican and all sorts of Asian fusion, there's tons of variety and flavor. It's also good if you have food allergies like me. Los Angeles was ranked #2 in vegan-friendly cities according to Forbes.

So if you're in the area, you're sure to find something!

No Hablo Español

Due to California having a large Hispanic population, many signs, documents, and programs are in Spanish. Coming from Florida, I'm used to hearing it although I don't understand it too well. I highly recommend learning a few phrases beforehand so the adjustment won't be as drastic. It might also help you make a few new friends.
